The University of Nebraska at Kearney Health and Sports Center
has been the home of Loper basketball, volleyball and wrestling events since
August of 1990. The 6,000-seat arena was opened after spending nearly 30 years
in Cushing Coliseum.
The cost of the
project was $10.8 million and was funded by Nebraska Legislature cigarette tax
revenues, student fees and private donations. Gracing the Health and Sports
Center's west entrance is artist John Raimondi's 20-foot sculpture, “Athleta.”
The air-conditioned
arena contains four scoreboards and an outstanding sound system.
Elevators exist for handicap access. The arena has hosted
numerous concerts and athletic events, including the 1995 & 2007 NCAA
Division II National Wrestling Championships and 1996 NCAA
Division II Northwest Regional Volleyball Championships, and the
NCAA Division II Volleyball National Championships in 2005. The
arena seated capacity
crowds on three consecutive nights for the 2005 Volleyball Championships,
including the largest crowd in NCAA Division II history to watch a volleyball
match, 5025.
