Nine Teams Have 3.0 GPA or Better
Kearney, NE – As always, Nebraska-Kearney student-athletes have had a strong year athletically, being in contention for a seventh straight RMAC All-Sports trophy, winning three conference crowns and having nearly every one of the 16 sports nationally ranked.
But, in another Loper tradition, the success doesn't end once the game does. In the classroom, UNK student-athletes are certainly making the grade, as the cumulative GPA for the athletic department for the 2001-02 academic year was 3.13. Roughly 400 UNK students compete in intercollegiate athletics.
"We're very pleased with the team GPA's. Once again our student-athletes have proven they are successful in the classroom and in their respective sports," said Assistant Athletic Director Laure Smith.
All eight women's teams had a cumulative GPA of 3.00 while the men's basketball team was the ninth and final squad over a 3.00. No squads combined GPA was lower than 2.65.
"This is a tribute not only to the commitment of the student-athletes but also to the quality of people the coaches bring into their programs," Smith said.
As they did last academic year, the women's basketball team had the highest team GPA (3.60). Head coach Amy Stephens saw her team go 23-7 and advance to the NCAA Tournament for the seventh straight year.
Women's cross country (3.48), softball (3.39) and women's tennis (3.38) had the next highest team GPA's.
The men's sports were led by basketball (3.36), a group that went 24-6, win a school-record 18 straight games and qualify for the NCAA Tournament.
Five other men's teams were at 2.84 or better; cross country (2.90), golf (2.89), football and wrestling (2.85 each) and track and field (2.84).
