Baseball Blanked by RegisSheldon Fans Eight, Nearing K Record
Kearney, Neb. - Regis sophomore Anthony Musielak threw a five hit complete game shut out to lead the Regis baseball team to a 3-0 win over Nebraska-Kearney Saturday morning at Memorial Field. The game was moved up to a 10:00 a.m. start time to avoid the bad weather. In the second game, the rain started to fall in the bottom of the fourth inning with the Rangers leading 1-0. This game will resume play Sunday at 10:00 a.m. with the scheduled double header (first game nine innings, second game seven) to follow. This series is a battle between the top two teams in the RMAC's Plains Division. Regis (22-18, 18-14) came in today with a 1/2 game lead over the Lopers (24-23, 17-16). That lead grew as Musielak (5-3), a right hander, fanned seven and worked around five walks, one hitter batter and one error. UNK left 12 runners on base and, including the second game, has failed to cross home plate in 18 straight innings. UNK junior Ryan Sheldon was almost equal to the task as he kept Regis off the scoreboard for the first five innings. However, three straight singles in the sixth broke up the scoreless game. Then, in the eighth, two singles and double brought home two more Rangers. Sheldon (7-4) went eight full innings and allowed 10 hits and two walks. He also fanned eight, giving him 86 for the season. The school record is 93, set by Neal Arnold in 1997. The big right hander has thrown in 86.2 innings; the school mark is 89 innings, held by Ryan Johnson in 1996. At the plate, Lincoln junior Nate Swearer went 2 for 4. The Rangers were paced by DH and clean up hitter Tyler Hageman (3 for 5, two RBI's). In game two, Regis scored an unearned run in the top of the third to take the lead. |
