Morris, Miller Earn Major Honors
Kearney, NE – Seventeen Nebraska-Kearney football players have been named to the 2002 All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference team. Of the seventeen, eight earned all-league honors last fall while nine are earning All-RMAC honors for the first time.
After leading UNK to a 9-1 record, a playoff berth and a share of the RMAC title, Darrell Morris was named the RMAC Coach of the Year. In three years as head coach, Morris has led the Lopers to a 24-6 mark including a 20-4 record in league play. UNK has also won 13 of its last 14 games.
Sophomore RB Mike Miller (Littleton, Colo.) was named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Year. He was named the Offensive Preseason Player of the Year in July. Former QB Justin Coleman won the same honor in 2000. Miller also earned first team honors for the second straight year.
Having the finest season ever by a Loper back, Miller has rushed 300 times for 1,494 yards and 12 TD's. His per game average of 149.4 leads the RMAC and ranks third nationally.
Also earning 1st-team honors on offense were senior center Steve Vecchio (Ft. Collins, Colo.), senior left guard Chris Blair (Urbandale, Ia.), senior kicker Henrik Juul-Nielsen (Denmark) and junior TE Joel Jacobs (Mullen). Vecchio, Nielsen and Jacobs are all repeat members on the first team while Blair makes the first team after earning second team honors last fall.
The Lopers top ranked defense, giving up just 14. 8 points and 279.9 yards per game, has five first team selections. They are senior LB's Mike Cordes (York) and Brian Wachtel (New Port Richey, Fla.), senior NG Mike Cunningham (David City), senior DE Bryan Eakin (Bakersfield, Callif.) and senior CB John English (Aurora). Eakin repeats as a first team member while Cordes and Wachtel move up after earning second team honors in 2001. English and Cunningham both make All-RMAC for the first time.
Three Lopers -- junior QB Pat Korth (Hastings), junior left tackle Ryan Bachman (Ponca) and redshirt freshman receiver Richie Ross (Lincoln) - made the second team. Finally, four Lopers earned honorable mention honors. They include senior right tackle Justin Van Horn (Ft. Collins, Colo.), junior safety Sean Haines (Ft. Collins, Colo.), sophomore LB Akil Davis (Aurora, Colo.) and sophomore receiver/kick returner Garth Mins (Lexington).
