Miller, Ross Lead Football in Road Win

Lopers Get By Pesky Fort Lewis, 47-25

Kearney, NE - Sophomore Mike Miller ran for 294 yards and freshman Richie Ross had 211 receiving yards as the 16th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney football won at Fort Lewis College, 47-25, Saturday afternoon in Durango, Colo. UNK improves to 7-1 (5-1 RMAC) while FLC falls to 1-7 (1-5 RMAC).

Cold and rainy weather created tough footing throughout the day and helped neutralize the Lopers advantage in speed. While the Lopers racked up 637 yards of total offense, several drives stalled and the pass happy Skyhawks kept the game close into the 4th quarter.

Fort Lewis, which came in averaging 28 points and 290 yards of passing per game, was led by QB Andrew Webb. He finished 33 of 60 for 440 yards, two scores and two picks. The Skyhawks finished with zero net rushing yards in 23 attempts. UNK came into the game ranked sixth nationally against the run (68.0).

The leading rusher in the RMAC, Miller carried the ball a school-record 46 times for 294 yards and two TD’s. The 294 yards is the second most in school history, trailing only Luke Van Matre's 307-yard effort in a 1982 game. Miller not only went over the 2,000 yard mark for his career (now at 2,187) but also becomes the first Loper to have multiple 1,000 rushing yard seasons in a career. After going for 1,101 yards in 2001, Miller currently stands at 1,083 for the year.

On the second play from scrimmage, Miller went 92 yards for a TD. That matches the third longest run in UNK history and the longest in 19 years.

Junior QB Pat Korth was 14 of 34 for 342 yards and three TD's. Ross made six catches for 211 yards and two TD's while Darnell Wood had five receptions for 103 yards. The 211 yards by Ross is the third most in school history and makes him the fourth Loper to have over 200 yards in a single game.

UNK and FLC were tied at 10 all after the first quarter but the Lopers were ahead by 11 points, 24-13, at halftime. The Lopers then went 76 yards in 11 plays to open the second half scoring. Korth found Ross from 20 yards out to make it a 31-13 cushion.

FLC trailed by only 12 points, 37-25, early in the fourth after a TD pass from Webb to Chris Brewer. UNK quickly responded with a Korth TD toss to Joel Jacobs minutes later. FLC again marched down the field but the drive ended when John English made his second INT of the day.  Also on defense, Jesse Calabretto had seven tackles and Theron Kitt six.

Kicker Henrik Juul-Nielsen was 4 of 6 in field goal attempts for the day, pushing his season total to 14 of 17. That ties him with Volker Olbrich for most made field goals in a season. Olbrich had 14 treys during the 1999 campaign.

Finally, the win pushes the Lopers road win streak nine games, dating back to October of 2000.

The Lopers host Fort Hays State next Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. in the final home game of the season.
