First Postseason Appearance in 22 Years
This is the Lopers first trip to the Division II playoffs. All of the Lopers previous postseason games (five) happened when UNK was a member of the NAIA. UNK has hosted two playoff games before, the last coming in 1979.
UNK is the second seed in the West Region with the Javelinas
(hah-vuh-lee-nahs) third. Unbeaten Central Washington (11-0) will host No. 4 seed California-Davis (8-2) in the other region match up. The two winners will meet November 30th at the higher seed.TAMUK, which won its 24th Lone Star Conference title Saturday, is one of the most storied programs in Division II. The have the highest winning percentage in Division II history (68.8) and are making their 11th playoff appearance. The Javelinas were national runner up in 1994 with their last trip to the playoffs coming last fall. They lost to Cal Davis, 37-32, in the first round. Current NFL stars Darrell Green, Jon Randle and Earl Dotson are just several of the Kingsville alumni that have gone on to the professional ranks.
This year, TAMUK is led by a QB Abel Gonzales, a Harlon Hill Trophy candidate, and defense that ranks in the top five nationally in total (241.8 ypg) and scoring (13.6 ppg) defense.
Tickets will be $8.00 for reserved grandstand seating while general admission tickets will cost $5.00. UNK students, with valid I.D., will be charged $3.00. Season ticket holders will have the first chance to purchase reserved tickets at the Health & Sports Center from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. tomorrow. Tickets will go on sale to the general public Tuesday morning at the Health & Sports Center and the NU Foundation Office, located at the corner of 2nd Avenue and 39th street. Both locations will be open from 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. For ticket questions, contact the UNK athletic department at 865-8330.
This is the second straight year an RMAC school has hosted a playoff game. Chadron State hosted Tarleton State (Texas) last fall in what was the RMAC's first ever home playoff game. The league is 1-10 all-time in the playoffs with Mesa State, in 2000, earning the conference's lone victory.
