UNK Gets Back on Winning Track with 42-14 Victory
Kearney, NE - Solid special teams and the running of Mike Miller (Littleton, Colo.) led the Nebraska-Kearney football team to a 42-14 RMAC win over New Mexico Highlands in front of 4,023 fans at Foster Field Saturday afternoon. UNK improves to 3-1 on the year while the Cowboys fall to 0-4.
Miller carried the ball 23 times for 127 yards and four TD's. The four rushing TD's tie Miller for the second most in school history with Kevin Trosper (1985) and Zach Mader (1998). Mike Lodice, in a 1995 game at Colorado Mines, rushed for five scores to set the UNK record.
The Loper special teams were also responsible for 21 points. Lexington sophomore Garth Mins took the opening kickoff 91 yards for a quick six. Early in the second half, sophomore Allen Burrell returned a punt 73 yards to the Highlands one yard line that setup Miller's fourth TD of the day. Finally, Mins blocked a punt that landed on the Highlands two yard line. That setup the Lopers last score.
"We spend a lot of time on special teams. Half of Thursday's practice is always spent on our kicking game," said UNK head coach Darrell Morris. "We told the team we could block a punt and we could have some good returns if we just took care of business. On the opening kickoff, it happened almost the way we drew it up. They kicked it to our left and we brought it back against the grain. Garth stay behind the wedge and once he was in the open, he's too fast for anyone to catch"
The Loper offense, quiet the last two weeks, finished with 301 total yards. Miller accounted for 167 of that as he also caught two balls for 40 yards. On a nine play, 70 yard drive in the second quarter, Miller touched the ball eight times, finishing the drive with a three yard run.
Junior QB Pat Korth played around three quarters and was 8 of 18 for 125 yards. Lincoln's Richie Ross had four receptions for 45 yards while the Loper defense was led by three linebackers in Jered Butts, Jesse Calabretto and Akil Davis. Each made eight tackles on the day.
Highlands was led by QB Nick Higgs who was 17 of 33 for 275 yards and two scores.
UNK, after three straight home games, travels to Adams State next Saturday.
