Lopers Beat Wayne State 29-3
Kearney, NE - Senior kicker Henrik Juul-Nielsen booted a school record five field goals as the 16th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney football team beat Wayne State 29-3 Saturday night at Foster Field in Kearney. The Lopers improve to 2-0 while the Wildcats drop to 0-2. This is UNK's first 2-0 start since the 1994 season.
Nielsen, from Denmark, made four kicks from at least 40 yards, including a career-best 46 yarder in the 3rd quarter. Coming into the night, Nielsen was 3 of 8 from 40 yards or more in his career. The previous mark for field goals in a game was held by Nielsen (last year at New Mexico Highlands), Mike Rowen and Mark Pilkington.
Nielsen also set a new school record for most kicking points in a game (17). Pilkington held the mark at 16 in a 1985 game vs. Moorhead State.
UNK's defense, tough against Nebraska-Omaha on August 29th, held Wayne to only 85 yards of total offense in their first 10 possessions. The Wildcats had a total of four first downs over the first three quarters.
"I thought our defense played very well, maybe got a little tired in the 4th quarter but only because our offense couldn’t sustain anything," head coach Darrell Morris said. "Offensively, we didn't play our best football game. Maybe its says something that we can win 29-3 when not playing at our best."
Junior QB Pat Korth was 15 of 22 for 155 yards. He also ran eight times for 11 yards and two short scores. Lincoln native Richie Ross made five catches for 52 yards and Allen Burrell returned six punts for 73 yards. Sophomore RB Mike Miller had 55 of his 61 yards rushing in the first half.
UNK's first TD came after a botched snap on a Wayne punt attempt. The Lopers offense then drove 60 yards in 10 plays late in the third quarter to score another TD.
Wayne was led by QB Justin Burhoop who ran for 76 yards and threw for an additional 69.
UNK is off next week before playing Western State on September 21st.
