Lopers to Play in All-Star Game
Kearney, NE –Nebraska-Kearney seniors Steve Vecchio and Henrik Juul-Nielsen have been selected to play in the 2003 Whataburger Cactus Bowl, NCAA Division II's annual all-star game for seniors.
The game, featuring 80 of the nation's best players, will be held Friday, January 10th at 6:30 p.m. in Kingsville, Texas. Texas A & M-Kingsville, who played UNK in the first round of the Division II playoffs this year, serves as host. FOX Sports Southwest will again televise the game live.
This is the 10th edition of the all-star game. The first seven contests were held in Fargo, N.D., and dubbed the Snow Bowl. It was moved to Kingsville in 2000 and was renamed the Cactus Bowl. Former Lopers Craig Neuhaus, Justin Coleman, David Cunningham and Matt Bruggeman, among others, have played in the Snow and Cactus Bowls.
Vecchio and Nielsen will be on the West team and be joined by fellow RMAC player Brian Sump (receiver/kick returner) of Colorado Mines. UNO's Lucas Brigman (center) and Conor Riley (guard) are also on the West squad.
A transfer from Northern Colorado, Vecchio was a two time first-team All-RMAC pick in his Loper career. He also served as team co-captain this past season.
This is the latest in a string of honors for Nielsen, the best kicker statistically in Division II this year. He was a three year starter and a two time first-team All-RMAC pick.
Players will report a few days earlier and go through two-a-day practice sessions and team meetings. Evaluations by the NFL and other professional scouts will also be part of each day's schedule. Each NFL team is expected to attend the practice sessions, as well as the game itself.
This past January at Javelina Stadium, a crowd of 12,500 watched the East beat the West, 42-12.
