Lopers Lose
First Ever D2 Playoff Game
to Texas A & M-Kingsville
Kearney, NE - Larry Williams rushed for 216 yards and four TD's and Texas A & M-Kingsville forced seven turnovers in a wild 58-40 NCAA Division II playoff victory over Nebraska-Kearney (9-2) Saturday afternoon at Foster Field. A crowd of 5,212 watched the Lopers first ever Division II playoff game and the first postseason home game in 23 years.
In a match up of two of the best defenses in the nation, the two teams combined for 98 points, 877 yards of total offense and a series of big plays.
TAMUK grabbed a 23-16 lead at the half thanks to TD runs of 53 and 75 yards by Williams and a blocked punt for a score. UNK ran 50 offensive plays to the Javelinas 23 in the first half and held a 289-193 lead in offensive yardage over the first 30 minutes.
The Javelinas forced five turnovers, including four fumbles, in the second half and finished the day with 24 points off Loper miscues. Eddie Moten gave TAMUK a 21 point lead, 37-16, late in the third after he returned an interception 25 yards for a score. UNK responded quickly as Garth Mins brought back the following kickoff 100 yards for a score.
TAMUK pushed its lead back to 21 after recovering a fumble deep in Loper territory. That resulted in Willams third TD run (22 yards). But UNK fought back once again as Mike Miller (33 carries for 106 yards) scored from four yards out and then Mins scored on a lateral from Richie Ross (10 recep., 204 yards, 1 TD). On the play, Ross made a acrobatic catch, was stopped at the four yard line and the lateraled the ball to Mins for the unlikely score.
Now down just 44-37, UNK saw the momentum go right back to Kingsville as the Javelinas took the ensuing kickoff to the UNK 14 yard line. That setup an Abel Gonzalez 11 yard TD pass to Gary Lusk.
UNK marched down the field once again but was forced to settle for a 24 yard field goal by Henrik Juul-Nielsen (4 for 4 on field goals) with eight minutes to go. A long Gonzalez run setup Williams final score of the long day a few minutes later.
Junior QB Pat Korth finished the day 24 of 46 for 381 yards and two scores. Kingsville ran 40 times for 325 yards with Williams and Gonzalez (11 carries, 99 yards) doing the damage on big runs.
Linebacker Jesse Calabretto (12 tackles) and defensive linemen Mike Cunningham (11 tackles) led the Loper defense.
