Lopers Tally Just a Field Goal in RMAC Opener
Kearney, NE - Western State used a stout defense and an opportunistic offense to upset the 11th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney football team, 20-3, Saturday afternoon at Foster Field. The RMAC opener for both, Western improves to 1-2 on the season while the Lopers drop to 2-1. Western also improves its record at Foster Field to 3-1 all-time.
Western backup quarterback Nate Baca came off the bench and scored two rushing TD's, both on 4th down. He finished with 33 yards on the ground and was 7 of 13 for 168 yards and one score through the air. Running back Nate Campbell accounted for 183 total yards (101 rushing, 73 receiving).
"I thought our defense played hard and played well for the most part. They played a lot of football because offensively we weren't consistent," head coach Darrell Morris said. "We moved the ball at times but mental mistakes and penalties seemed to get us at critical times. Those things kind of things come back to haunt you."
On its first offensive possession, UNK went 74 yards in 11 plays to grab a 3-0 lead. However, UNK mustered 70 total yards on its next seven possessions. The Loper offense got going again at the end of the 3rd quarter as three subsequent drives amassed 102 yards and moved the ball into Western territory. However, the drives ended with two punts and an interception.
Western took the lead for good in the second quarter when Baca scored on a QB sneak on 4th and goal from the 1 yard line. The drive was setup by a 68-yard pass play from Baca to Campbell that gave the Mountaineers the ball at the UNK three.
Later in the third with it still 6-3, Western had a 4th and two from the Loper 29-yard line. Baca pulled off a perfect bootleg and ran down the right sideline for the score. The Mountaineers last scoring drive was setup by two long pass plays to Pat Walker. One covered 36-yards, the other was a 48-yard play that pull the ball at the Loper one.
Junior QB Pat Korth was 19 of 41 for 174 yards and two INT's. Sophomore WR Allen Burrell made seven catches for 65 yards while sophomore Mike Miller carried the rock 14 times for 81 yards.
Senior LB Brian Wachtel had two interceptions, three pass deflections and eight tackles to highlight the defensive effort. Linebacker Mike Cordes and safety Sean Haines led UNK in tackles with 10 each.
