Mines Ends Streak to FootballRoss Throws a TD in Setback Kearney, NE – Senior QB Chad Friehauf accounted for 399 yards of offense and had a hand in five touchdowns to lead 19th-ranked Colorado School of Mines to a 34-10 win over Nebraska-Kearney Saturday afternoon at Foster Field. Mines’ (7-0, 4-0 RMAC) has now won a school record nine straight games, dating back to last year. It's also the Orediggers first win over UNK since 1939 and first-ever win in Kearney (1-8). UNK (3-4, 2-2 RMAC) has dropped its last two games and saw an 11-game win streak over Mines come to an end on Homecoming weekend. Friehauf, at 6-7, 210 lbs., was 28 of 38 for 320 yards and four TD's through the air. He also rushed for a team-high 79 yards and a score on 13 carries. The momentum of the game changed late in the first half when Friehauf threw a 51-yard TD pass to Jonny Chan (4 recep., 130 yds., 2 TD’s) with just seconds remaining in the second quarter, giving Mines a 21-10 lead. The UNK defense forced two three and outs on Mines' first two possessions of the second half but the 'Diggers picked off senior QB Eric Perry on back-to-back possessions when the Lopers had the ball. The first pick led to a 13-yard TD pass from Friehauf to Chan that increased the Mines lead to 18 points. Mines finished the game with 489 yards of offense while the Lopers were at 334 yards. UNK mustered just over a 100 hundred yards of offense after halftime and had four second half turnovers. Senior Mike Miller (Littleton, Colo.) ran for 88 yards while junior Richie Ross (Lincoln) caught six balls for 49 yards. He also threw a 28-yard pass to senior Darnell Wood (Denver, Colo.) for the Lopers only score of the game. Last year, Ross had a 43-yard pass at N.M. Highlands. With his receiving effort today, Ross needs 50 yards to become the Lopers all-time leading receiver, passing Trevor Weston (3,266 yards). Defensively for UNK, sophomore safety Paul Jimenez (Chino, Calif.) had a team-high 14 tackles, including eight solo stops. Senior ILB Akil Davis (Aurora, Colo.) added nine tackles while sophomore safety Yly Rock (Aurora, Colo.) had seven. Junior Kevin Arbuckle (Moorpark, Calif.) relieved Perry late in the third quarter and will not redshirt, as he was slated to do. The transfer from Los Angeles Valley J.C. was 4 of 8 for 51 yards. Arbuckle is the fourth player to take snaps for UNK this year, including juniors Casey Samuelson and Marcus Goldenstein. Samuelson’s season ended in the second game of the year due to an arm injury while Goldenstein is battling an array of arm ailments. UNK travels to Chadron State next Saturday. |
