Both
Loper Squads on Winning Streaks
Kearney, NE — The University of Nebraska at Kearney men's and
women's basketball teams extended their winning streaks Friday night in
the Health & Sports Center. Colorado Christian was the victim and the
Cougars ran into second half buzz saws in the second half. The UNK women
outscored CCU 52-29 in the final 20 minutes to post an 89-61 victory. The
Loper men were even better after halftime, tallying 67 points in a 97-59
win over the Cougars.
The sixth-ranked UNK women are now 15-0 and 8-0 in the RMAC. With
tonight's win, the Lopers tie their best start in school history. The
1997-98 team also began with 15 wins. The win was the 80th
straight at the Health & Sports Center as well. The UNK men have won
seven in a row and improved to 10-3 and 6-2 in RMAC play.
In the men's game, the Lopers shot 73 percent in the second half
and forced 24 CCU turnovers in another big RMAC victory. UNK opened the
second half on a 17-6 run to put away the Cougars. UNK, which led by only
seven points at halftime, would have 20 more shots than Christian on the
night, mainly to those 24 turnovers.
Four players were in double figures and 11 of the 12 players that
played scored. Senior John Webber and sophomore Mitt Gitt
(Valley) led the way with 18 points apiece. Freshman forward Nick
Branting (North Platte) tied his career-high, set just last Saturday,
with 13 points.
Colorado Christian (1-14, 0-8 RMAC) was led by Matt Chambless' 13
points.
The Loper women opened the second half on a 20-1 run, thanks to
holding Christian without a field goal for the first seven minutes of the
half. UNK forced 16 turnovers and out boarded the Cougars 23-18 after
halftime.
All nine players who played scored, led by Beth Swift's 22
points. She was five of eight from the field after halftime, good for
13-second half points. Four other Lopers were in double figures, each
scoring 11 points. Freshman Heather Steffen (West Point) had her 11
points and six rebounds coming off the bench.
Colorado Christian (8-6, 4-4 RMAC) was led by Tina Redmond's 33
points and seven rebounds. Redmond is among the RMAC scoring leaders at
18.8 a game.
UNK hosts Regis University tomorrow at 6:00 and 8:00 p.m.
