Farrell's 66 Has Men's Golf Third in CaliforniaLopers Shoot Solid 288 in 2nd Round
Kearney, Neb. – Nebraska-Kearney sophomore Alex Farrell shot a six under par 66 -- a course record -- in the second round of the 2008 Northwest/West Super Regional Tuesday in Petaluma, Calif., and is now in second place in the tournament. As a team, UNK had a 288 on Tuesday to vault three places to third (597). Minnesota State (595) is second with Colorado-Colorado Springs in first (584). UCCS also shot a 288 today to grab a firm hold of the lead. This three-day, 54-hole tournament is being hosted by Sonoma State University and held at the par 72 Adobe Creek Golf Club. A Kearney High graduate, Farrell had four birdies on the front nine to turn in a 32, then had three more birdies on the back nine to have the best round of any Northwest, or West Regional, golfer on Tuesday. On Monday, Farrell had two birdies, but eight bogyes, to turn in a six over par 78 (144 total). Scott Crichton of Western New Mexico (72-71) leads Farrell by one stroke; three golfers sit two strokes in third place. Also for the Lopers, Gering sophomore Max Hadenfeldt (147) is tied for sixth place after a two over par 74 today. His second round featured three birdies and 12 pars. Next, South Dakota junior Andy Bednar is tied for 10th (149) after an even par 72 on Tuesday. He had five birdies and 10 pars today. Rounding out the UNK five some is Broken Bow junior Preston Foster (T-34th/158: 81-77) and Ord sophomore Devon Kastler (41st/163: 87-76). On the same course, 2nd-ranked Sonoma State leads the West Regional with ridiculous 14 under par 576 (285-277). SSU is just one of seven teams in the West to be nationally-ranked. The individual West leader is Jarin Todd of SSU (six under par 138). This is the first phase of the NCAA Division II Championships. There are five “Super Regionals” being played this week, encompassing 10 regions. \The ten regional winners automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships, May 14-17 in Houston. An additional 10 teams from “Super Regionals” -- and select individuals -- will receive at-large bids to the NCAA’s. | ||
