The three-day tournament, the first phase of the NCAA Division II Championships, was played at the par 72 Adobe Creek Golf Club.

Thanks to an ever par 72, Gering sophomore Max Hadenfeldt tied Scott Crichton of Western New Mexico for first place at a three over par 219.

Hadenfeldt, who also had rounds of 73 and 74, birdied three of the last seven holes to catch Crichton, who is ranked 73rd nationally. Over the three days, Hadenfeldt recorded 10 birdies on 10 different holes.

UNK began the tournament with a 309 but shot a 288 on Tuesday to fault into third place. The Lopers battled Western New Mexico for second place on Wednesday but the Mustangs finally won out with a 298. They finished at an 898 overall.

Colorado-Colorado Springs easily won the tournament with an 875 (296-288-291) and will now move on to the NCAA Championships May 14-17 in Houston, Texas.

Also for UNK, South Dakota junior Andy Bednar tied for 10th (223/77-72-74) and Kearney sophomore Alex Farrell tied for 12th (225/78-66-81).  Rounding out the lineup were Broken Bow junior Preston Foster (T-35th/237: 81-77-79) and Ord sophomore Devon Kastler (T-39th/243:87-76-80).

At the same time, the West Regional tournament was held and 2nd-ranked Sonoma State shot a three under par 861 to finish first. The medalist here was Ryan Sperry of Grand Canyon (five under par 211).

Receiving at-large bids to Houston were Western Washington, Grand Canyon, Cal-State San Bernardino and Cal-State Stanislaus’ Erick Justesen (212).
