Kearney, Neb. - Nebraska-Kearney head football coach
Darrell Morris today announced the name of four junior college transfers who will play for the Lopers this fall.
With these additions, the Loper incoming class now numbers 48 (38 high school seniors & 10 transfers). Several of these newcomers came to Kearney in January and worked out with the team this past winter and spring.
This latest foursome all hail from California and include corner back
Arthur Hobbs (Spring Valley/Grossmont College), safety
Jake Richardson (San Bruno/Foothill College), quarterback
Kevin Romero (Manhattan Beach/L.A. Harbor College) and offensive linemen
Dion Wilson (Fresno/Santa Rosa Junior College).
Each has two years of eligibility remaining.
Hobbs (5-11, 180 lbs.) is the second Grossmont Griffin to join UNK this year. In January, corner
Kenny Hill transferred to UNK. Last fall, Hobbs made 20 tackles and had six pass breakups to help Grossmont go 8-3 and win the U.S. Bank Beach Bowl. As a senior at Mt. Miguel High, he earned 1st-team all-conference honors.
Richardson (5-11, 210 lbs.), who also spent time at C.C. of San Francisco, made 40 tackles in just eight games in 2008. He was part of a Foothill team that went 8-3 that year and won the Silicon Valley Bowl.
Romero (6-1, 210 lbs.) was a backup QB at L.A. Harbor this year and also spent time at El Camino College. As a senior at Mira Costa High in 2005, he set several school records, including completions in a season (172) and career (357). He also tossed 31 TD's as a senior, helping him to earn all-area and all-league honors.
He will be the second upperclassmen QB on the Lopers roster. Two-year starter
Jake Spitzlberger will be a fourth-year junior this fall.
Finally, Wilson (6-0, 250 lbs.) played center for a Santa Rosa Bear Cubs team that went 5-5 in 2009 but was 8-3 a year earlier and champions of the Premiere Bank Bowl. Santa Rosa's current head coach, Keith Simons, a former offensive coordinator at Wayne State.
UNK will begin fall camp on Saturday, August 7th.
