Aqualopers Seventh in South Dakota

UNK Also Drops Dual to Moorhead State

            Kearney, NE – The Nebraska-Kearney women’s swimming and diving team spent the weekend in Brookings, S.D., where they lost a dual to Minnesota State-Moorhead, 168-70, on Friday night and then placed seventh out of eight teams in the SDSU Invite on Saturday.

            In the meet Saturday, the Aqualopers tallied 244 points to place ahead of Buena Vista U. of Iowa (167) and just one point behind meet host South Dakota State. UNO ran away with the meet by tallying 536.50 points. Moorhead was runner up with 395 points.

            Kansas junior Kristina Jegel tallied 39 points by placing in the top 10 in three different events. She was fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:25.33), eighth in the 1,000 free (12:01.52) and ninth in the 500 free (5:54.15).

            Colorado sophomore Jesslyn Hackman had two top 10 finishes for 29 points. She was fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:43.37) and eighth in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.54). Also, Scottsbluff freshman Becky Tompkins was the other Aqualoper to bring home some big points (36) as she had three finishes in the top 11. She was seventh in the 200 breaststroke (2:47.31), eighth in the 200 butterfly (2:41.30) and 11th in the 200 individual medley (2:28.37).

            This trio, along with Lincoln sophomore Katie Wenz, had an impressive sixth place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (4:05.69) to score 26 team points.

            On Friday, those who placed ahead of Moorhead swimmers included Minnesota freshman Jen Morlock in the 1,000 free (12:17.94), Jegel in the 200 free (2:10.38) and 100 backstroke (1:04.53) and the 200 free relay team (1:56.97) of Wenz, Morlock, Tompkins and Kansas freshman Tricia Hayes.

            UNK competes in the UNO Invite in two weeks.
