Tennis Rolls Past Warriors in Fremont2008 Spring Opener
Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams began their spring season by both beating Midland Lutheran Saturday afternoon in Fremont. The UNK men (2-0) were victorious 9-0 over the Warriors while the Loper women (2-0) won 7-2. Both points for Midland came as a result of UNK forfeits at No. 3 double and No. 6 singles. On the men's side, UNK gave up just three points in doubles action. The No. 1 team of William Jacome (Miami) and Andres Espinosa (Colombia) won 8-2 while the No. 2 team of Drew Mercier (Omaha) and Stefan Voigt (Red Wing, Minn.) won 8-1. UNK then won all singles six matches, five by 6-0, 6-0 scores. The only point for the Warriors came at the No. 1 spot where Evan Hoisington lost 6-1, 6-0. Midland then forfeited at No. 6 singles. The Loper women were almost as dominating as McKenna Irwin (Bellevue) and Callie Erickson (Fremont) won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles and Jenna Eichman (Hastings) and Katie-Mary Outhwaite (Western Australia) won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles. In singles action, Holdrege freshman Marcelle Strydom won 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot over Trisa Abbe. The UNK men are now off until early March while the Loper women will face Central Oklahoma in Lincoln next Saturday. |
