Loper Freshman Pulls Upset on Regional's First DayLopers Record Several Wins
Kearney, Neb. – The first day of the Wilson/ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Central Regional saw Nebraska-Kearney freshman Josh Raymond win in both the singles and double brackets. The three-day tournament is being held at Harmon/Sertorma Courts, as well as the new Harvey Park tennis courts. Besides the Lopers, schools in attendance include Metro State, Mesa State, Colorado State-Pueblo, Colorado Christian and Minnesota State. The winners of the singles and doubles brackets will advance to the National Small College Championships Oct. 16-19 in Mobile, Alabama. In the singles bracket on Friday, Raymond (Elkhorn) upset 5th-seed Rashad Khamis of Mesa State (6-3-, 6-4) in the second round. Raymond began the tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Nate Pearson of Metro State. Raymond will face 3rd-seed Bea Fresquez of CSU-Pueblo in one quarterfinal match Saturday morning. Raymond and doubles partner Casey Colbert (Cheyenne, Wyo.) lost their first round match but bounced back with an 8-3 win over teammates Jason Lescelius (Columbus) and Tony Lopez (Omaha Central) to remain alive in the consolation bracket. Other Lopers to win on Friday included Randal Bachle (Murdock) in first round singles and Lescelius and junior Noriaki Naruse (Miki Town, Japan) consolation singles. Metro State’s Sascha Ruckelshausen, the top seed in both singles and doubles, is still alive. His doubles partner, Scott Bradley, is the second seed in the singles bracket. Saturday’s play begins at 8:00 a.m. at Harvey Park. After those matches are completed, all action will take place at Harvey Park. |
