UNK Program for Two Years
Kearney, NE – Andy Meyer will return as the head men and women's track coach at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, it was announced today by Athletic Director Mike Sumpter. Meyer left UNK last August to pursue outside business opportunities. He will begin his transition back into the program immediately.
"I'm excited to be coming back. To have an opportunity to work with the outstanding group of student-athletes we have in the track and field program, not to mention the good people in the athletic department, is something I cannot pass up," Meyer said.
Meyer took over the reigns of the UNK track program in August of 1998 and continued the Lopers strong tradition in track and field. The RMAC men's Indoor Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2000, Meyer led the men's team to two straight RMAC indoor titles. He helped senior Janet Boettcher win a national title in the hammer throw last spring and had 12 different student-athletes win RMAC titles.
"UNK athletics had been very good to me in the past five years. I enjoyed working with the athletes too much to stay out of coaching. The energy, excitement and the rewards associated with coaching at this level is very difficult to get out of your blood," Meyer said. "I cannot thank my family and Mike enough for making this opportunity possible."
Other notable achievements by the Lopers under Meyer include the top finish by a Loper men's team at the RMAC outdoor championships (2nd in 1999), consistent top 20 finishes at the NCAA Championships by both the men's and women's teams (both indoor and outdoor) and eight different All-Americans.
Rich Brodersen, who lettered in track at UNK from 1991-94, will also join the program as an assistant coach. During his track days, he specialized in sprint and jump events. Brodersen will organize and oversee home meets, help Meyer with administrative duties and handle other duties as assigned.
Meyer, a three-time All-American in the discus at UNL, graduated with a degree in agricultural business in 1994. He continued in track after his collegiate career, competing in the 1995 USA Championships and in the 1996 Olympic Trials. Before becoming head coach of the Lopers, he was an assistant at UNK for two seasons.
