Track Finishes with
Five All-Americans

Boettcher All-American in Two Events

Kearney, Neb. – The University of Nebraska at Kearney track teams left the 2001 NCAA Championships in Edwardsville, Ill., with five different All-Americans.

Earning top honors were five seniors; Ryan Bedlan (Shickley), Janet Boettcher (Scotia), Joe Cooper (Big Springs), Wes Hinze (Albion) and Joel Janecek (Gering). In the team race, UNK tied for 26th on the women’s side (10 points) and was in a two-way tie for 31st in the men’s competition (seven points). St. Augustine’s won both national titles.

On Saturday, all four men qualifiers competed in their event finals. In the 110-high hurdles, Janecek was seventh and Hinze eighth (14.65). Janecek’s time of 14.27 tied Hinze’s school record, set in May of 1998. Eric Moss of Albany State won the event in a time of 13.81.

Bedlan, running in the 400-meter dash, and Boettcher, competing in the shot put, also finished seventh. Bedlan ran a 48.47, about two seconds from winner Orville Taylor of New York Tech (46.59). Boettcher, finishing up a sensational career, tossed the shot 49-9.75. The throw was a personal best and the second furthest in school history. Heather Leverington of Emporia State won with a 53-5 throw. Earlier in the meet, Boettcher earned All-American honors on the hammer throw.

The final top eight finisher was Cooper who placed seventh in the 800 meter run. He ran a 1:52.67 late Saturday night, about two seconds behind winner John Kemboi (1:50.06) of Abilene Christian.

Juniors Leah Lewis (16th/triple jump/11.41 m) and Korina Hunter (10th/javelin/134-5) also competed Saturday.
