Four
More Champions Today; Men Break Two School Records
Kearney, NE — The University of Nebraska at Kearney track teams placed second (men) and fourth (women) at the 2001 RMAC Outdoor Track Championships, held this weekend in Hays, Kan.
The host Fort Hays State Tigers won both team titles. The Tiger men defended their crown, scoring 190.50 points, compared to the Lopers 172.50. This was UNK's second runner up finish, the first coming in 1999.
Things were much tighter on the women's side where Hays won its first-ever outdoor title. Thanks to a first place showing in the 4 X 400 relay, the last event of the meet, the Tigers (188) got past Western State (187) by one point. UNK (103) finished fourth for the seventh straight season.
The Hays men, which trailed UNK after the second day, won the title with strong performances in the sprint events and javelin. Hays earned 61 points in just four events today, including 31 by placing one through six in the javelin. The Tigers also placed first in the 100, 200 and 400 meter dashes.
UNK, which had two champions yesterday, had three more today; Holdrege freshman Byron Riddle in the 400 intermediate hurdles (54.08), Lexington freshman John Laux in the triple jump (47-4) and Ansley sophomore Derek Bailey in the high jump (6-8). Laux shared Freshmen of the Year Honors with Jared Peacock of Colorado Mines and Paul McRae of Western State.
Finishing second were seniors Joel Janecek (110-high hurdles/14.40) and Joel Farrand (long jump/45-10.75), freshman Mike Ford (pole vault/14-9) and the 4X100 relay team of Janecek, freshmen Scott Schukar, Garth Mins and Clark Spanel. Their time of 41.16 breaks the school record of 41.27, set in May 1998. Janecek also ran on that team
Third place efforts included Janecek in the 200 (21.69/provisoinal) and fellow seniors Ryan Bedlan in the 400 (47.64/provisional), Joe Cooper in the 800 (1:52.90) and Brett Wetton in the shot put (52-4). Bedlan broke the 400-meter school record set by James Parks (47.81) in 1988.
On the women's side, Kearney junior Leah Lewis was the Lopers lone winner today. She won the triple jump with a leap of 38-4.50. Lewis also was fourth in the high jump (5-1) to lead UNK in that event as well.
Senior Janet Boettcher, who won the hammer throw yesterday, placed third in the shot put (45-10.50). She had won the past two RMAC titles in the event.
Other top four finishers included Geneva sophomore Jessica Reinsch in the 100-meter low hurdles (2nd/14.74), York junior Torri Walford in the 400 meter hurdles (4th/1:06.99) and Milligan sophomore Marla Sharp in the triple jump (35-1.75).
UNK will compete in a NCAA Qualifier next weekend and then send a group to the NCAA Championships the following weekend.
