First
Outdoor Meet of the Season
Kearney, NE – Senior Janet Boettcher (Scotia) and freshman Garth Mins (Lexington) led the University of Nebraska at Kearney track and field team Saturday at the UNK Open in Kearney. It was the first outdoor meet of the season for the Lopers. Also in attendance were Fort Hays State, Doane College, Hastings College, Colby C.C. and Garden City C.C. Team scores were not kept.
Boettcher recorded first place finishes in both the hammer throw (178-5) and shot put (44-5.25). She also placed third in the discus (132-2). Mins, who is a wider receiver on the UNK football team, won the 100 (10.82) and 200-meter (21.93) dashes.
Doniphan senior Jana Marco (pole vault/10-6) and Omaha junior Karen Koch (discus/137-00) were the other UNK women to finish first. Another Loper star was York junior Torri Walford, who was runner-up in both the 110 meter-high hurdles (15:03) and the 400 intermediate hurdles (1:09.21).
The Loper men also had two other first place finishers. Senior Wes Hinze, of Albion, nipped teammate Joel Janecek in the 110-meter high hurdles. Hinze ran a 14.55 while Janecek was at 14.82
Funk senior Scott Schneider led a strong effort by the UNK distance team. He won the 5,000 meter run in a time of 15:57.82. In other events, Heath Stukenholtz and Jeff Gorman were second and third, respectively, in the 3,000 meter run while Cody Klasna was third at 1,500 meters.
UNK runs at that Alex Francis Invitational in Hays, Kan. next Saturday.
