Boettcher,
Wetton Sets Meet Records
Kearney, NE –The University of Nebraska at Kearney indoor track team had six first place finishers at the Tiger Track Classic Saturday in Crete, Neb. The non-team scoring event was hosted by Doane College.
On the women's side, senior Janet Boettcher was first, again, in both the shot put and the 20 lbs. weight throw. For the men, distance runners Joe Cooper (600 yard run) and Heath Stukenholtz (1 mile run) were first as were Nick Artz (long jump) and Brett Wetton (35 lbs. weight throw).
Boettcher tossed the shot 45-5.00, almost three feet more than the closest competition. She was even more impressive in the weight throw, heaving it 58-2.25, eight feet further than the second place finisher. The throw also broke her own meet record of 58-1.50, set just last year.
Other highlights for the women included Marla Sharp placing third in the triple jump (36-2.25) and fourth in the 220 yard dash (27.44). Geneva's Jessica Reinsch (17-9.50/long jump) and Adams native Becky Williams (5-2/high jump) also placed third.
Wetton didn't break his own school record in the weight throw but he did shatter the meet record. Wetton's toss of 61-3.25 was much better than the record of 55-1.00, set by Doane's Rusty Sutton last winter.
Artz, already a provisional NCAA qualifier, had a season-best jump of 23-5.25. Fellow provisional qualifier Clark Spanel (Gr. Island) was second (22-5.50). Earlier in the meet, Artz (Kearney) was second in the 60-yard dash (6.53).
Cooper (1:15.12) literally won by a hair over Doane's Anthony Mann (1:15.13) in the 600 yard run. In the mile, UNK had three of the top four finishers, led by Stukenholtz's effort of 4:29.97.
UNK finishes its regular season this Saturday in Lincoln at the NWU/UNL Invitational.Contact:
