Cooper
Earns NCAA Provisional time
Kearney, NE – The University of Nebraska at Kearney indoor track season doesn't begin in earnest until mid-January but several Lopers got an early start by participating at indoor meets at Iowa State and Kansas State this past weekend.
At Cyclone Holiday Classic Friday in Ames, five distance runners competed in several events. Senior Joe Cooper (Big Springs) placed first, and set a meet record, at 800 meters. His time of 1:52.26 bested the previous meet record of 1:52.90 and was just off the school mark (1:51.99/Andy Goulet, 1998). The effort also is a NCAA Championship provisional qualifying time.
Sophomore Tony Neels (6th/1:56.43)) and senior Scott Haug (13th/1:59.01) also ran at 800 meters. Senior Joel Brandt (49.73) placed sixth at 400 meters while freshman Kathryn Alt also collected at sixth place finish at 800 meters (2:24.32).
Friday and Saturday at the KSU All-Comer meet in Manhattan, Kan., several Loper sprinters and jumpers performed well. Kearney natives Leah Lewis (3rd/37'02.25) and Renee Bergmeier (4th/36'04.00) placed in the top five in the triple jump. Bergmeier (18'01.50) then placed fifth in the long jump.
Freshman Angela Sorenson (Pine Bluffs, Wyo.) began her collegiate career with seventh place finishes in the 400-meter dash (1:02.32) and in the 60-meter high hurdles (9.4). Junior Torri Walford tied Sorenson for seventh in the hurdles.
On the men's side, UNK had three of the top 14 finishers in the 60-meter high hurdles. Senior Joel Janecek was fourth (8.25), senior Wes Hinze eighth (8.39) and sophomore Derek Bailey placed 14th (8.69). Bailey also had a sixth place finish in the high jump (6'05.50).
Senior Joel Farrand rounded on the Lopers day with a fifth place effort in the triple jump (44'04.25).
UNK begins its season January 13th with the UNK Opener in Cushing Coliseum.Contact:
