Place 4th, 9th at Division II Challenge
Kearney, NE – At Saturday's Division II Challenge in Emporia, Kan., the University of Nebraska at Kearney outdoor track team had five different individuals place second. In the team race, the UNK men were fourth (80 points) while the Loper women placed ninth (45.50 points).
On the men's side, seniors Joe Cooper (800-meter run), Joel Janecek (110-meter high hurdles) and Brett Wetton (hammer throw) each placed second in their respective event.
Janecek, running a 14.40, edged out Wes Hinze (14.48) for second place in the hurdles. Earlier in the meet, Janecek placed fourth in the 200-meter dash (21.54).
Cooper, who already got a NCAA provisional time last week, ran a 1:52.66 and just missed out on winning the 800-meter run. Jared Peacock of Colorado School of Mines, at 1:52.41, edged him out.
In his first outdoor meet of the season, Wetton tossed the hammer 179-1, a provisional throw. Charlie Perez of host Emporia State (181-11) was the winner. Wetton then placed fourth in the shot put (52-2).
Other top five finishers for the Lopers were Heath Stukenholtz (3,000-meter steeplechase/4th), Mike Ford (pole vault/4th) and Clark Spanel (long jump/5th).
Senior Janet Boettcher led the women. She was runner up in both the hammer throw (173-3) and shot put (46-4.75).
Junior Korina Hunter, in the javelin, was the final Loper to place second. She had a season-best throw of 139-4, a NCAA provisional toss by nine feet. Fellow junior Leah Lewis matched her season best effort in the triple jump (38-5.50). She would place fourth in the event.
