FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 27, 2001
Boettcher,
Wetton Break More School Records
Kearney, NE — The University of Nebraska at Kearney men's
indoor track team, and the Doane College women's indoor track squad, were
victorious Saturday at a triangular meet held in UNK's Cushing Colesium.
The UNK men tallied 139 points to outdistance Fort Hays State
(94.50) by a healthy margin. Doane was third with 85.50 points. Things
were a lot closer on the women's side as Doane (126) edged out the Lopers
by 16 points. Hays placed third with 85 points.
On the men's side, the UNK men were victorious in 10 different
events. Senior Joel Janecek (Gering) took home first place honors
in the 200-meter dash (22.35) and 55 meter high hurdles (7.56). In the
hurdles, Janecek edged out fellow senior Wes Hinze (7.56) in a
photo finish.
A week after breaking his own school record in the 35 lbs. weight
throw, senior Brett Wetton (Geneva) was at it again. He tossed the
weight 62'11.50", well above last week's record throw of
61'06.25". Other highlights included Kearney sophomore Nick Artz
placing first in the long jump (23'03.25"). The effort was above the
NCAA provisional mark of 23'00.00". He is the seventh Loper to have a
NCAA mark this winter.
Other winners included Joel Brandt (400 meters), Joe
Cooper (800 meters), Scott Schneider (5,00 meters), Derek
Bailey (high jump), Joel Farrand (triple jump) and Mike Ford
(pole vault)
Senior Janet Boettcher (Scotia), as usual, was dominant in
the shot put and 20 lbs. weight throw. She tossed the shot put
45'03.25" and the weight a whopping 59'08.00", 11 feet further
than the competition. The throw broke her own school record of 58-8.50,
set last February.
Freshman Kathryn Alt (Hildreth) was the other Loper to place
first, topping the field in the 800 meter run (2:25.12). Kearney senior Leah
Lewis placed second in both the long and triple jumps while sophomore Timmery
Nielsen (St. Paul) was second to Boettcher in both throwing events.
