FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 28, 2001
37-year
old record falls
Kearney, NE — The University of Nebraska at Kearney track teams
had a busy last weekend of the regular season. Yesterday, a majority of
the team participated in the Hastings College Invitational while a few
Lopers attended the prestigious Drake Relays.
At Drake, the men's 4
X 200 relay team of seniors Ryan Bedlan (Shickley) and Joel Janecek
(Gering) and freshmen Garth Mins (Lexington) and Scott Schukar (Loomis)
broke a 37-year old record…twice. In the prelims, the group won their
heat (seven teams) in a time of 1:26.08, breaking the school mark of
1:26.80, set way back in 1964. In the finals, the team went even faster
(1:25.93) and placed fifth overall. Lindenwood of Virginia won in a time
of 1:24.53.
UNK's sprint medley relay team -- Bedlan, Janecek, senior Joe
Cooper (Big Springs) and freshman Clark Spanel (Grand Island) -- placed
sixth out of 21 teams with a time of 3:22.28, just off the school record
of 3:22.72. Finally, the 4 x 100 team (Spanel, Mins, Schukar, Janecek) ran
a 41.85 to place third in their heat. The UNK record for the event is at
41.27.
On the women's side, Kearney junior Leah Lewis placed 22nd
in the triple jump.
(37-3.75). She was one of only two
non-Division I athletes in the event.
At Hastings, UNK had a total of eight first place finishers, four
on each side. The event was non-team scoring.
The men saw Brett Wetton (hammer throw/175-11), Wes Hinze (110-mer
high hurdles/44.66), Heath Stukenholtz (3,000 meter steeplechase/9:43.44)
and Mike Ford (pole vault/15-1) all win their respective events. In
addition, Derek Bailey (high jump/6-6) and Casey Marsh (400-meter
dash/49.01) placed second. UNK then placed 2-6 in the discus, led by David
Smith (160-3).
The Loper women were paced by Janet Boettcher who won both the shot
put (44-10) and hammer throw (170-6.50). She also was third in the discus
(132-7).
Karen Koch (138-7.50) won the discus event and Amanda Cronin tied
for first in the high jump (5-6). UNK had two other top three finishes in
Renee Bergmeier (triple jump/37-5.75) and Torri Walford (110-meter low
hurdles/15.24). Each placed third in their events.
