Boettcher, Wetton Lead
Track at Haylett Invitational

Kearney, NE – Senior throwers Janet Boettcher (Scotia) and Brett Wetton (Geneva) led the University of Nebraska at Kearney indoor track team at Doane College's Woody Haylett Invitational Saturday in Crete. The event was non-team scoring.

Wetton won the 35 lbs. weight throw with a toss of 61'06.25". The effort broke his own school record (61'03.00"/2-19-99) and automatically qualified him for the NCAA Division II Championships in March. The throw also shattered the meet (50'06.50") and stadium (58'10.50") records. Sophomore Brian Meade (51'05.00") also broke the meet record and placed third in the event.

In the shot put, UNK placed 2-3-5 and were led by Scott Schephers (53'03.25"). Schephers had already earned a NCAA provisional mark last week (52-7). Wetton was third (51'02.25") and Kurt Nielsen (48'10.50") was fifth.

The men were also dominant in the long jump where the Lopers were 2-3-4. Nick Artz was runner up with a leap of 22'11.00". In the triple jump, UNK had three of the top eight finishers, led by John Laux (4th/46'02.00").

Finally, Heath Stukenholtz won the two mile run (9:55), Garth Mins was first in the 60-yard dash (6.48) and Mike Ford was second in the pole vault (14'09.00"),.

Boettcher won both the shot put (44'10.25") and 20 lbs. weight throw. Her toss of 57'11.50" in the weight throw smashed the meet record of 52'.04.50". She is already a national qualifier in both events.

Jana Marco was second in the pole vault (10'06.00") for the second straight week while Leah Lewis (36'10.50") and Marla Sharp (36'00.00") were second and third in the triple jump.

UNK returns home next weekend when Fort Hays and Dana come to Cushing Coliseum.
