Track Performs Well at Hays Invite

Lopers Have 12 Different First Place Finishers

Kearney, NE – The University of Nebraska at Kearney had 14-first place finishes Saturday at the Alex Francis Invitational in Hays, Kan. The event was non-team scoring.

The men were particularly dominant, having eight individual winners and two wins in relay events. Seniors Wes Hinze (110-high hurdles/14.52) and Joe Cooper (800-meter run/1:52.22) claimed victory but it was a day for the underclassmen. Sophomores Derek Bailey (High Jump/6-4) and Heath Stukenholtz (3,000-meter steeplechase/9:50.7) won their events, as did freshmen Mike Ford (Pole Vault/15-00), Clark Spanel (Long Jump/22-7), John Laux (Triple Jump/47-8) and David Smith (Discus/156-2). Finally, UNK won the 4 x 100 (41.46) and 4 x 200 (1:29.00) relay events. The effort in the 4 X 100 was a new meet record, breaking Fort Hays State's 42.00, set in 1995.

Cooper's effort was a provisional effort for the NCAA Championships.

For the women, placing first were senior Janet Boettcher (hammer throw and shot put) and Jana Marco (Pole Vault/10-00), junior Leah Lewis (Triple Jump/37-8.25) and sophomore Karen Koch (Discus/140-7).

Boettcher, who also placed third in the discus, shattered the stadium record in the hammer throw. She tossed it 179-00, breaking her own record of 166-5, set two years ago. In the shot put, her throw of 46-2 was just off the record (47-2.5). Both throws were NCAA provisional efforts.

Finally, York junior Torri Walford was second in both the 110-high hurdles (15.23) and 400-intermediate hurdles (1:09.05).
