 Barton County C.C.
Dominates Loper Open

UNK Has Nine Provisional NCAA Qualifiers

Kearney, NE – The indoor track season began Saturday as the University of Nebraska at Kearney hosted a six-team meet, the Loper Open. No team scores were kept in the first meet of the year.

Besides UNK, Fort Hays State, Hastings College, McPherson College, Barton County C.C. and Colby C.C. were in attendance.

Barton brought home the most victories of any school; eight on the men's side and six for the women. The most impressive performance for the Couargs was Alfred Ncale, who broke the arena record (Nate Leaper/ Dodge City CC/7-2) in the high jump. He leaped 7-2.50.

UNK had four winners and, more importantly, nine provisional qualifying marks for the NCAA Division II championships. Placing first were senior throwers Janet Boettcher (20 lbs. weight throw) and Brett Wetton (35 lbs. weight throw). Wetton won with a 58-11.75 while Boettcher tossed the weight 58-5.75. In the women's pole vault, junior Jana Marco dominated, going 10-6, better than a foot and half over the rest of the field. All three efforts were qualifying standards. Boettcher also qualified in the shot put.

Sophomore Elizabeth Goltz, in 11:58.18, won at 3,000-meters for the Lopers other victory.

Other UNK athletes to get qualifying marks on the day were Leah Lewis and Renee Bergmeier (both in the triple jump), Wes Hinze and Joel Janecek (both in the 55m hurdles) and Derek Bailey (high jump).

UNK travels to the Ward Haylett Invitational next Saturday.
