Janecek Qualifies for Finals in 55 Meter Hurdles
Kearney, NE – The University of Nebraska at Kearney ended day one with two All-Americans at the 2001 NCAA Division II National Indoor Track and Field Championships in Boston, Mass. Friday.
For the Loper women, senior Janet Boettcher (Scotia) finished second in the women's weight throw event to claim her seventh All-American honor. Boettcher won the national championship in that event in 1999. Boettcher threw 59 feet even and was bested by North Dakota State's Diandra Bauer, who threw 60 feet, 8-3/4 inches.
For the Loper men, senior Brett Wetton (Geneva) finished third in the men's weight throw event. Wetton threw 61 feet 10 -1/2 inches and missed second place by less than two feet. Saginaw Valley State's Paul Markel won the event with a throw of 64 feet, 7 inches.
One other highlight in the day came in the 55-meter hurdles, as senior Joel Janecek (Gering) qualified for the finals with a time of 7.57 seconds. The fastest time in the preliminaries came from Emporia State's Dustin Brock (7.37). Fellow teammate Wes Hinze (Albion) just missed the cut for finals, fininshing 11th (7.66).
Also competing in the meet were Derek Bailey (Ansley), who finished 11th in the high jump (6' 6"); Clark Spanel (Grand Island), who finished 12th in the long jump (22' 1/4"); Joe Cooper (Big Springs), who fell just short of qualifying for the finals in the 800 meter run (1:55.02); and Jessica Reinsch (Geneva), who finished 14th in the long jump (17' 10-3/4").
On the schedule for day two on Saturday for the Lopers: Boettcher will compete in the shot put, Leah Lewis (Kearney) will compete in the triple jump, Scott Schepers (Kearney) will compete in the shot put and Janecek will compete in the 55-meter hurdles finals.
