FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 18, 2001
Kearney, NE – Senior thrower Brett Wetton and junior Joe Cooper led the University of Nebraska at Kearney indoor track team at Saturday's non-team scoring Prairie Wolf Invitational in Lincoln. This was the last regular season meet for UNK; the squad will compete at the RMAC Championships next weekend in Golden, Colo.
Wetton won the 35 lbs. weight throw with a toss of 64-8.50, over six feet better than the runner up (58-0). The throw was almost two feet off of Wetton's school record (66-1), set earlier this year. The Geneva native currently leads all of NCAA Division II in the event.
Cooper broke his own school record in the 800-meter run. Placing fourth, he ran a 1:51.64, better than his 1:52.26 effort at Iowa State in December. Both times are provisional efforts for the NCAA's.
The 4 X 400 relay team also got a provisional time. The squad ran a 3:16.61 to place third, behind Cloud County C.C. and NW Missouri State. The time to qualify was 3:17.40.
Other highlights for the men include seniors Wes Hinze and Joel Janecek placing second and third in the 60 meter high hurdles. Hinze ran an 8.11 while Janecek was at 8.12. Freshman Jeff Gorman placed second in one section of the 3,000-meter run while sophomore Heath Stukenholtz was fifth in the other heat. Stukenholtz ran an 8:49.06 while Gorman was at 9:05.85.
On the women's side, the Lopers were most dominant in the first section of the 3,000-meter run. Sophomore Stephanie Schneider was second (10:46.77), freshman Cynthe Stine third (10:48.71) and Elizabeth Goltz fifth (10:58.85). UNK also proved tough at 800 meters where they had three of the top 10 finishers, led by freshman Kathryn Alt (5th/2:25.55).
Sophomore Timmery Nielsen would place fifth in the shot put and ninth in the 20 lbs. weight throw. She was the team's top thrower on the weekend, as senior Janet Boettcher didn't compete in the meet due to prior commitment.
Kearney junior Leah Lewis was the other standout for the women, placing fifth in the triple jump and seventh in the long jump.
