Women
Finish 2nd; Ford, Scheid Honored
Kearney, NE – The University of Nebraska at Kearney men's indoor track team etched its name into the RMAC record books Saturday night by winning their fourth straight league title. No school has ever won four straight men's indoor championships.
UNK scored 144 points, well ahead of second place Adams State (96). This is the most points ever scored by a Loper team, topping the 143 set by the first title team back in 1998.
On the women's side, Adams State's eight-year run as league champions ended. Western State tallied 165 points and was followed by the UNK women (106.33). This is the second straight year the women have been runner-up.
The men, who led by 30 points after day one (53-23), had a total of four individual champions. Senior Wes Hinze was victorious today in the 55-meter high hurdles in a season-best time 7.55. Senior Joel Janecek, the defending champion, was third (7.69).
Winning titles yesterday were senior Brett Wetton (35 lbs. weight throw), freshman Clark Spanel (long jump) and freshman Mike Ford (pole vault).
Ford was honored as the league's Newcomer of the Year while Marcus Scheid was named the Coach of the Year.
UNK also had four second place finishers in senior Ryan Bedlan (200 meters), junior Scott Schepers (shot put), sophomore Derek Bailey (high jump), and freshman John Laux (triple jump).
Lexington freshman Garth Mins had a strong first RMAC's, finishing third in both the 55 meter dash and pole vault and fifth in the 200 meter dash. Fellow freshman Casey Marsh was third in the 400 meter dash while Laux earned a NCAA provisional effort in the triple jump (48-4.50).
As she has for most of her career, senior Janet Boettcher led the women. She won her 10th straight RMAC title on Saturday by placing first in the shot put. Her toss of 48-5 broke her own meet record (46-8) by almost two feet. On Friday, she won the 20 lbs. weight throw.
Kearney natives Leah Lewis and Renee Bergmeier placed 1-2 in the triple jump. Lewis won with a season-best leap of 39-3 while Bergmeier, last year's champion, was right behind at 38-8.75.
After winning the long jump title yesterday, Geneva sophomore Jessica Reinsch placed second today in the 55-meter high hurdles (8.52). Doniphan senior Jana Marco (pole vault) was the women's fourth and final champion.
