Men's
Track Team Aiming for Four Peat; Ranked No. 1
Kearney, NE – The University of Nebraska at Kearney hopes to pick up its first RMAC titles of the 2000-01 season this weekend. Wrestling and indoor track are holding their championships Friday and Saturday with UNK being the defending champion in two of three sports.
Southern Colorado is hosting the wrestling tournament in Pueblo. The track championships are just up the road in Golden at the Colorado School of Mines.
The men's indoor track team will try and become the first RMAC-school to win four straight titles. Adams State also won three consecutive titles (1990-92). The Loper women will try and end one of the longest title runs in league history. Adams State's women have won the past eight indoor titles but the Lopers are a major threat to break that run. At the 2000 championships, UNK had its best finish ever, placing second to the Grizzlies.
For both Loper squads to bring home the hardware, the key will be to dominate the throw, jump and sprint events. Adams and Western State are the nation's most dominant teams in distance running and usually collect a majority of their points in those few events.
The men have three returning champions in Joel Janecek (55-meter hurdles), Jeremy Chancellor (long jump) and Joel Farrand (triple jump). In addition, Brett Wetton is ranked No.1 in all of Division II in the 35 lbs. weight throw.
UNK won the 2000 title by one point, 131-130, over Western State. It came down to the last race, the 4 X 400 relay, and the Lopers placed second (eight points), three spots ahead of Western (two points).
Janet Boettcher leads the UNK women. She has won the shot put and 20 lbs. weight throw titles each of the last two years. Fellow senior Renee Bergmeier (triple jump) is the Lopers other defending champion.
In the most recent dual rankings, the Loper men are ranked No.1 while the women are 4th. To see the complete results, click here.
