Have Six Individual Champions;
Three School Records Set
Kearney, NE – Both the University of Nebraska at Kearney indoor track teams are leading after the first day of the 2001 RMAC Championships. The two-day event is being held in Golden, Colo., and hosted by the Colorado School of Mines.
The Loper men, trying for a fourth straight title, have a 30-point lead over Adams State (53-23). Things are closer on the women's side as UNK has a nine point edge on Western State, 45-36. The Adams State women have won the past eight indoor titles. They are currently third with 19 points.
Senior Brett Wetton (35 lbs. weight throw) and freshmen Mike Ford (pole vault) and Clark Spanel (long jump) each won RMAC titles in their respective events. On the women's side, UNK had three champions as well, in seniors Janet Boettcher (20 lbs. weight throw) and Jana Marco (pole vault) and sophomore Jessica Reinsch (long jump).
Boettcher won her ninth straight RMAC title (indoor and outdoor combined) by breaking her own meet, and school, record in the weight throw. Her toss of 59-11 bested her effort of 58-8.50 at last year's championships. Reinsch not only won the long jump but her leap of 19-9 automatically qualifies her for the NCAA's. In addition, she shattered a 13-year old school record in the event (Carrie Goltl, 19-2.50, 1988)
The Geneva native also had the fastest time (8.42) in the prelims of the 55-meter high hurdles.
Marco also broke a school record in winning her event. She cleared 11 feet, two inches more than Sandy Lewandowski's record of 10-8, set last year.
The men didn't set any records but were dominant in most events. UNK went 1-2-3 in the weight throw, paced by Wetton (63-11) and followed by Scott Schepers (53-10.50) and Brian Meade (51-4).
Ford went 15-5 to win the pole vault and was joined by fellow freshman Garth Mins (14-11) in the top three. Spanel had a season-best leap of 23-10.50 to win in the long jump.
UNK will have three in the finals of the 200-meter dash, led by senior Ryan Bedlan (22.73). The Lopers will also place three in the finals of the 55-meter dash, including Mins (6.57). Finally, seniors Wes Hinze (7.57) and Joel Janecek (7.61) went 1-2 in the prelims of the 55-meter high hurdles.
