Adams State Women Win; Loper Women 2nd
Kearney, NE — The dominance for the Nebraska-Kearney men's track team continued while the Adams State women's track team returned to a familiar spot Saturday at the RMAC Indoor Track Championships.
Held in Cushing Coliseum, the two-day event concluded today with the UNK men winning its fifth straight title (118 points). Only Adams State (six) has won more league titles than the Lopers. The Adams women (132.50), which had its eight year reign as RMAC champs ended last year by Western State, won their 10th league title by rallying past the Loper women. This marks the third straight year UNK has finished runner up.
The UNK men pretty much led from start to finish and had the meet sewn up well before the last few events were run. Loper head coach Andy Meyer was named the Men's Coach of the Year, the third time he has won the honor. Allen Burrell (Aurora, Colo.) was named the league's Freshman of the Year after winning the 200 meter dash (21.87) and placing second in the 60 meter dash. Burrell ran a season-low 6.81 in the event, a shade behind Fort Hays State's Mike Appelhans (6.82).
Besides Burrell. and Brian Meade (weight throw) last nigh, UNK had two other first place finishes. Bertrand sophomore Mike Ford defended his title in the pole vault (15-2) while fellow sophomore John Laux (Lexington) was victorious in the triple jump (46-7.50).
Other highlights today included second place finishes by juniors Nate Wheat (shot put), Jesse Kruger (high jump) and Chris Gannon (long jump) and sophomore Casey Marsh (400).
The Adams women finally overtook UNK during the 3,000 meter run, the second to last event of the day. The Grizzlies tallied 22 points in that event to turn a 2.5 point deficit into an insurmountable lead. Overall, UNK had five first place finishes in the meet.
Geneva junior Jessica Reinsch won the 60 meter hurdles (8.87), her second victory of the weekend. She placed first in the long jump last night. She joins Janet Boettcher ('01) as the only Loper women to have ever won two RMAC indoor titles in the same year.
Also today, Kearney senior Leah Lewis repeated as the RMAC champ in the triple jump (38-10.25).
She also placed second in the high jump (5-4) and was third last night in the long jump. Finally, St. Paul junior Timmery Nielsen won the shot put crown (43-8.75).
The final list of qualifiers for the NCAA Championships, held in two weeks in Boston, will be released Monday night. UNK should be well represented on both sides.
