Lopers in Colorado For the League Meet
Kearney, NE - The Nebraska-Kearney track team is in Alamosa, Colo., this weekend for the RMAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The three day event begins today with the heptathlon and decathlon.
The Lopers, who've provisionally qualified 13 different athletes for the NCAA Championships, will battle Fort Hays State, Western State and host Adams State for the league titles. Chadron State, Colorado Mines and Colo.-Colo. Springs also sponsor track.
Hays won both the men's and women's titles last year and are favored to repeat. Adams and Western will be tough, as always, in distance running events while UNK should score a lot of points in the throws and jump and sprint events.
UNK has three individuals who hope to defend their individual titles. Kearney senior Leah Lewis in the triple jump, Kearney senior Jim DeLaet in the discus and Lexington sophomore John Laux in the triple jump.
On the men's side, the Lopers have been runner up in two of the past three years. The team will be extremely tough in the discus where four Lopers, including DeLaet, rank in the top 25 nationally. Bancroft sophomore Derek Frese has the second best throw in Division II this year in the event (175-7).
The women have placed fourth in the meet all seven years the Lopers have been in the RMAC. Lewis currently has the best effort in the RMAC in the triple jump (39-1.75) while ranking second in the long jump (18-5.25). Geneva junior Jessica Reinsch is first in the 100 meter high hurdles (14.75) as is St. Paul junior Timmery Nielsen in the shot put (41-10) and Maywood junior Leanne Fritsche in the discus (145-11). Finally, UNK has the top three tosses in the hammer, led by Butte sophomore Amber Tiefenthaler (157-10).
