Lopers Competed Tuesday at Concordia
Kearney, NE - In a tune up for next weekend's NCAA Championships, the Nebraska-Kearney track team spent Tuesday night at the Concordia Twilight meet in Seward.
The highlight for the Lopers was Arnold junior Dave Smith breaking the school record in the discus and Maywood junior Leanne Fritsche breaking the school mark in the javelin.
Smith placed third with a toss of 181-6, besting Tyson Bertrand's record of 181-4 set in 1999. After the record breaking toss, head coach Andy Meyer, competing unattached, promptly recorded a throw of 181-7 to sneak past Smith into second place.
Also in the discus, Derek Frese placed seventh (167-8), Scott Jorgensen eighth (158-1) and Jim DeLeat 11th (150-7).
On the women's side, Fritsche placed third in the javelin with a toss of 141-8. That breaks the school mark of 140-9, set by Korina Hunter in 1999. Fritsche also placed third in the discus (134-3), an event where UNK had four of the first nine finishers.
Junior Megan Holmes, finishing fourth, led UNK in the hammer throw with a season-best effort of 160-9. Finally, Elizabeth Goltz was second in the 3,000 meter run (11:08.54).
UNK leaves next Tuesday morning for the NCAA's which will be held in San Angelo, Texas, May 23-25.
