Lopers Have Five New Qualifiers
Kearney, NE - The Nebraska-Kearney men's track team placed eighth and the Loper women 10th at the prestigious Division II Challenge, held this past Saturday at Emporia, Kan. The event featured many of the best track teams from around the area.
The UNK men tallied 42 points to place 8th out of 15 teams. Fort Hays State won (105.0) with the runner up being NW Missouri State (85.0). On the women's side, the Lopers tallied 40.0 points to place 10th out of 17 teams. North Dakota State won (105.0) while Truman State (93.0) was second.
A total of five individuals had NCAA provisional qualifying efforts. They were sophomore John Laux in the triple jump, senior Karen Koch in the discus, junior Megan Holmes and sophomore Amber Tiefenthaler in the hammer throw and junior Jessica Reinsch in the heptathlon. The squad now has 13 different individuals qualified in at least one event (seven men, six women).
Overall, the Lopers top finisher was senior Leah Lewis in the triple jump. She placed second with a leap of 38-3.50. Lewis was also sixth in the long jump (17-6.75).
Placing third were Koch in the discus (145-7) and Tiefenthaler in the hammer (157-10). Holmes was right behind her teammate in the hammer, placing fourth (157-4). Junior Leanne Fritsche, who has already provisionally qualified in two events, was sixth in the discus (144-0).
Reinsch scored 4,524 points to place seventh in the heptathlon. She was then fourth in the long jump (18-0.25) and sixth in the 100 meter high hurdles.
On the men's side freshmen Allen Burrell placed third in both the 100 (10.83) and 200 (21.74) meter dashes. Also placing third in an event was Scott Jorgensen in the discus with a toss of 164-3. Dave Smith (5th/158-7) and Jim DeLeat (7th/157-9) also cracked the top ten in the discus.
Laux leaped 48-11 to placed fourth in the triple jump. Other Lopers to have top six finishes included Scott Schukar in the 200 (5th/21.99) and Will Hood in the pole vault (6th/14-5.25).
UNK competes in the Kansas and Doane Relays next weekend
