Breaks Owns School Record
Kearney, NE - Nebraska-Kearney junior Dave Smith (Arnold) placed second in the discus this afternoon at the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships in San Angelo, Texas.
Earning All-American honors for the first time, Smith joins Ivan Ivanov and Janet Boettcher as the only Lopers who've placed first or second at the NCAA Track Championship (indoor or outdoor).
Ivanov was the 1996 national champion, and 1995 runner up, in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Boettcher, in the hammer and weight throws, won two national titles and had two national runner up finishes in her great career.
Smith tossed the discus 182-8, breaking his own school record of 181-6, set May 14th at the Concordia Invite in Seward.
Later today John Laux and Leah Lewis compete in the triple jump while Allen Burrell and Scott Schukar compete in the 200 meter dash prelims.
