Men's 4 X 100 Relay Competes at Drake Relays
Kearney, NE - The final tune up for the Nebraska-Kearney track team before the RMAC Championships was Friday afternoon at the Hastings College Invitational. The Lopers had 10 first place finishes, seven coming on the women's side.
In addition, the men's 4 x 100 relay team traveled to Des Moines for the prestigious Drake Relays. The team of Garth Mins, Allen Burrell, Mike Bell and Scott Schukar qualified for the finals Saturday by running a 41.40 in Friday's prelims. That was the second best effort in their heat behind Fort Hays State (41.07). The Lopers, however, didn't finish the race Saturday. Wisconsin-LaCrosse won in a time of 40.53.
At Hastings, senior Leah Lewis and junior Dave Smith led the UNK attack. Lewis won both the long (17-5.75) and triple jumps (39-1.75). Her effort in the triple jump was a season-high and would place her 7th nationally. Smith helped UNK place second through six in the discus. His effort of 171-2 is a season-high and would rank him 6th nationally. Both Lewis and Smith had already provisionally qualified in their respective events.
On the women's side, also winning were senior Karen Koch (discus/139-7), junior Jessica Reinsch (100 meter hurdles/14.87), sophomore Kathryn Alt (8000/2:18.58) and freshmen Amanda Maryott (100/12.77) and Andrea Herndon (1,500/5:00.73).
Placed second were Kelly Throener in the 5,000 meter run (18L39.54), Timmery Nielsen in the hammer (148-10) and Leanne Fritsche (136-11) in the discus.
Loper men who won their respective events were senior Shannon Stenger (800/1:57.51), sophomore John Laux (triple jump/48-1.75) and freshman Will Hood (pole vault/15-1). Hood actually was part of a four way tie for first place.
Laux also placed second in the long jump (22-7.25), followed by senior Jeremy Chancellor (21-11.75). Chancellor also placed third in the 100 meter dash (11.31). Also placing third on the day were Jim Deleat in the discus (160-0) and Nate Wheat in the shot put (51-6.75). Wheat is redshirting in the outdoor season so he competed unattached.
UNK competes at the RMAC Championships May 3-5 in Alamosa, Colo.
