Track 2nd at Hays Meet

Lopers Have 12 First Place Finishers

Kearney, NE — The Nebraska-Kearney outdoor track team scored 388 points to place second out of eight teams at the Alex Francis Relays yesterday in Hays, Kans. Host Fort Hays State won the meet with 566 points.

Due to the excessive wind, efforts in the jump and sprint events cannot count towards the NCAA Championships. Overall, the Lopers had 12 first place finishers, eight coming on the women's side.

Geneva junior Jessica Reinsch led the strong women's showing (217 points) by placing first in both the 100 meter hurdles (14.75) and the high jump (5-1). She also was third in the long jump (17-4.50).

Juniors Leanne Fritsche (discus/145-11), Megan Holmes (hammer/148-10) and Timmery Nielsen (shot put/41-10) helped UNK sweep all the throwing events. Nielsen (147-7) placed second to Holmes in the hammer as well.

Senior Leah Lewis (triple jump/39-0.25), sophomore Kathryn Alt (800/2:22.87) and freshman Andrea Herndon (5,000/19:31.93) were the other first place finishers. Lewis also placed second in the long jump (17-7.25) as did freshman Kelly Throener in the 800 (19:39.06).

The men (171 points) placed 1-3 in the discus, led by sophomore Derek Frese (175.7). Head coach Andy Meyer, competing unattached, actually won the event with a meet record toss of 194-2.

Also placing first for the Lopers were sophomores John Laux (triple jump/48-4.25) and Mike Ford (pole vault/15-9). UNK also won the 4 x 200 relay event (1:27.52).

UNK also had seven second place finishers, led by Allen Burrell (100/10.62) and Casey Marsh (400/49.11) in the sprint events.
