UNK
Has Seven 1st Place Finishes
Kearney, NE — The Nebraska-Kearney track team opened its home indoor season Saturday with the Loper Open in Cushing Colesium. The event was non-team scoring and also included Fort Hays State, Doane College, Hastings College and Colby Community College.
Eight different Lopers -- six women and two men -- had NCAA provisional marks. They were senior Leah Lewis (Kearney), juniors Jessica Reinsch (McCook), Megan Holmes (Scottsbluff) and Timmery Nielsen (St. Paul), sophomore Amber Tiefenthaler (Butte) and freshman Amanda Maryott (Wayne). The men to provisional qualify were Arnold junior Dave Smith and Bancroft sophomore Derek Frese. Five of the eight who qualified did so in the weight throw.
After two meets, UNK has six men and six women provisional qualified for the NCAA Championships to be held in Boston this March.
On the women's side, UNK had four first place finishers led by a one through four showing in the 20 lbs. weight throw. Holmes (54-3.50) won the event, followed by Tiefenthaler (52-2.50), Nielsen (50-10) and Leanne Fritsche (49-6). The mark to provisional qualify in the weight throw is 50 feet even.
Reinsch, who qualified last week in the long jump, did so in the 55 meter intermediate hurdles today. She won the event in a time of 8.44 but ran quicker (8.34) in the prelims to sneak under the needed time (8.39). Lewis placed 2nd in the triple jump but her effort of 38-3.00 easily qualifies her, again, for the NCAA's. Reinsch also placed 2nd in the long jump (18-3.50) while Lewis was runner up in the high jump (5-2).
Maryott placed 3rd in the 55 meter dash (7.22), just getting under the 7.23 needed to provisionally qualify. She later placed 2nd in the 200 meter dash (26.81). Kathryn Alt (800/2:21.46) and Elizabeth Goltz (5,000/19:19.10) were the other women to win .
In the men's 35 lbs. weight throw, the Lopers placed second through four, led by Brian Meade (56-11.50). He provisionally qualified last Saturday. Smith (54-3), third, and Frese (54-2), fourth, improved their throws to beat the provisional mark (53-1.75) this week.
Winning today were Casey Marsh (400/50.52), Heath Stukenholtz (3,000/9:24.68) and Mike Ford (pole vault/15-0). Derek Bailey, who is redshirting this year, was first in the high jump (6-6) and third (7.84) behind former Loper Joel Janecek (7.58) in the 55 meter high hurdles.
Second place finishers included Shannon Stenger (mile), Clint Skrdla (3,000) and Kurt Nielsen (shot).
UNK hosts the Charlie Foster Classic next Saturday.
