Burrell Breaks School Mark, Still Not Enough to Qualify
Kearney, NE - In the first day of the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships in San Angelo, Texas, the Nebraska-Kearney men's 4 X 100 relay team qualified for the finals. In addition, freshman Allen Burrell (Aurora, Colo.) broke his own school record in 100 meter dash.
Sophomores Garth Mins (Lexington), Scott Schukar (Loomis) and Clark Spanel (Grand Island) join Burrell on the relay team. UNK placed fourth in the second of two heats in a time of 40.92. The top two finishes in each heat, plus the next four fastest times, qualify for the finals. The Lopers got the eighth and final spot, beating out South Dakota (41.50). The finals are scheduled for Saturday at 6:10 p.m.
Fort Hays State had the fastest time (39.91) while Abilene Christian was second (40.09).
Burrell then ran in the preliminaries of the 100 meter dash. He placed third in the first of three heats in a time of 10.37. That bested his own school mark of 10.52, set at the RMAC Championships a few weeks ago.
The top two finishers in each heat, along with the next five fastest times, qualify for the finals. Burrell didn't make the cut as he ranked 11th overall.
Christie VanWyk of Abilene had the best prelim time (10.06) while Tom Green of South Dakota was second best (10.10).
UNK will have several athletes competing tomorrow in the men's discus, men's 200-meter dash and women's triple jump.
