Lopers Compete in NCAA's

Wheat finishes 3rd in Shot Put

            Kearney, NE — Six different University of Nebraska at Kearney track and field athletes were in competition at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships in Boston, MA. Two more Lopers will join the field tomorrow as Day Two begins.

After the completion of Day One in Boston, junior Nate Wheat (Lakin, Kan.) finished third in the shot put with a throw of 56' 04.50" earning him his first All-American honor of his career. Finishing ninth in the event, sophomore Kurt Nielsen (Grand Island) missed earning All-American honors by only three inches. Nielsen threw 53' 08.25 in the competition.

Scottsbluff junior Megan Holmes finished in 11th place in the weight throw (50' 06.75) in her first trip to Boston. Junior Jessica Reinsch (Geneva), making her second trip to the NCAA Championships, finished 14th in the long jump with a best of 5.20 meters.

On the track, sophomore Casey Marsh (Hastings) advanced to the finals of the 400 meter dash as he ran the event in 48.80 to qualify. On the other side, freshman Allen Burrell (Aurora, Colo.) just missed qualifying for the finals of the 55 meter dash by the slimmest of margins, finishing the event with a time of 6.93 seconds.

            Senior Leah Lewis (Kearney) is a veteran of the NCAA Championships, earning All-American honors at last year's meet, will compete in the triple jump on the second day of the meet. Junior Brian Meade (Papillion) will be making his debut appearance at the NCAA's as he competes in the weight throw.

            The top eight finishers in each event earn All-American honors.
