Lopers Have Three Champions
Kearney, NE – The Nebraska-Kearney women's track team and the Adams State men's track team are leading after the first day of the RMAC Indoor Track Championships, held in Cushing Coliseum. UNK has 42 points to lead Adams by five while the Adams men have a one point lead over Western State.
The meet begins tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. and should conclude around 2:00 p.m.
The UNK men have won four straight league titles but sit in fourth place with 18 points. Papillion junior Brian Meade earned 10 of those points when he won the weight throw title with a toss of 57-11. Grand Island sophomore Clark Spanel earned four points with a fourth place effort in the long jump (22-9.50).
The Loper men did well in the sprint prelims. Hastings sophomore Casey Marsh (49.78) has the best time in the 400 while four Lopers have qualified for the 200 finals, led by freshman Allen Burrell (22.24). Burrell also has the second best time in the 60 meter dash prelims (6.90).
Western star Michael Aish set a new meet record in the 5,000 meter run (14:18.24). The time was 15 seconds faster than the second place finisher and was easily ahead of the old record (14:21:02).
On the women's side, Geneva junior Jessica Reinsch defended her league title in the long jump. She leaped a season-best 18-11.25, almost ensuring her a spot at the NCAA Championships. Senior Leah Lewis was third (18-1.50).
Junior Megan Holmes (Scottsbluff) won her first RMAC title in the weight throw. She also a season-best effort (54-6.25). UNK picked up 12 more points in the weight throw as Amber Tiefethaler (Butte), Timmery Nielsen (St. Paul) and Leann Fritsche (Maywood) placed three through five.
The Lopers qualified three in the 60 meter hurdle finals, led by Reinsch (2nd/9.00).
Adams State's distance medley relay team set a new meet record (11:51.12) by a big margin (12:22.12, Western, 1998).
