Lopers Pull A Surprise, Win First-Ever Track Crown
Kearney, NE - The Nebraska-Kearney women's track team had never finished higher than fourth at the RMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Not only did the Lopers change that this year but the team pulled a shocker and walked away as champions. UNK, scoring 158 points, edged out Fort Hays State and Adams State by a 10 points for its first-ever RMAC track title, indoors or outdoors.
On the men's side, UNK placed fourth (114) with Hays (204) winning the crown for the third straight season.
Geneva junior Jessica Reinsch was named Co-Athlete of the Meet while head coach Andy Meyer was named Coach of the Year on the women's side. He was named men's Coach of the Year during the indoor season.
The women placed first in five events with Reinsch winning the heptathlon Friday (4,632 points) and the 100 meter high hurdles today (14.74). Her effort in the heptathlon broke her school record (4.524), set earlier this year. Reinsch also placed fourth in the long jump and ran on the 4 X 100 relay team that placed third.
The Lopers scored a total of 24 team points in the 100 hurdles as Torri Walford placed second (14.93) and Angie Sorensen third (15.32). Another big event for UNK was the discus on Friday. By placing one through five, UNK earned 30 team points. Karen Koch (139-10) was the champion followed by Leanne Fritsche (131-03).
Kearney senior Leah Lewis won the triple jump for the second straight year, doing so in school record fashion; 40-1.50. Renee Bergmeier held the mark at 39-9, set in 2000. Freshmen Amanda Kreikmeier (3rd) and Kate Semin (5th) helped UNK net a total of 18 points in the triple jump.
Lewis also placed second in the high jump (5-4) and was third in the long jump.
Finally, UNK had three of the top four finishers in the hammer throw, led by champion Megan Holmes (160-2). That was another 20 points towards the team cause.
On the men's side Lexington sophomore John Laux repeated as triple jump champion. He set a new stadium record, and broke Danny Flemming's school record (49-4.25/1991), by leaping 49-7.75. This was an event where the Lopers tallied 18 points as Chris Gannon placed third and Nate Harms fifth.
Junior Dave Smith was the other Loper to win as he placed first in the discus on Friday (168-5). Like the women, this was a big event for UNK as the men got 22 of their points here. Derek Frese was second and Scott Jorgensen fourth.
Freshman Allen Burrell had a sensational meet as he placed second in both the 100 (10.52) and 200 (21.29) meter dashes. The 100 time is a new school record (Eric Gray, 10.55, 1998) while the 200 effort ties Neil Taylor's school record, set way back in 1985.
Burrell then teamed with Garth Mins, Clark Spanel and Scott Schukar on the 4 X 100 relay team that placed second in a school record time of 40.48.
The final record breaker of the meet was sophomore Casey Marsh in the 400 meter dash. He placed third (47.61), just ahead of Ryan Bedlan's school mark (47.64) set at last year's RMAC Championships.
UNK runs at two last chance meets next weekend in Lincoln and Emporia, Kan.
