Outdoor Track Opens Season

Lopers Have Three Provisional Qualifiers

            Kearney, NE — The Nebraska-Kearney outdoor track team opened its season today at the Kearney High track with its annual UNK Open. The event was non-team scoring and featured UNO, Hastings, Fort Hays State, York College and Doane College.

            The Lopers had a total of eight first place finishers and three NCAA Championship provisional qualifiers. Those earning provisional times were senior Leah Lewis (triple jump), junior Leanne Fritsche (javelin) and freshmen Allen Burrell (100 meter dash).

            The Loper women had six first place finishers led by Lewis. She won the long jump (17-8.25) and placed 2nd in the triple jump (38-2). Doane's Rochelle Schmidt won the triple jump with a leap of 38-4. Fritsche placed third in the javelin with a throw of 133-6. The NCAA provisional mark in the event is 133-0.

            Also placing first on the day were senior Karen Koch (discus), juniors Timmery Nielsen (hammer) and Jessica Reinsch (100 hurdles) and sophomores Angela Sorensen (400 hurdles) and Kathryn Alt (800).

            On the men's side Burrell placed second in the 100 meter dash. He ran a 10.61, just ahead of the provisional time of 10.68. Fort Hays' Mike Applehans won in a time of 10.51. Burrell also placed 3rd in the 200 (21.80).

            Winning for UNK were Arnold junior Dave Smith (discus/166-11) and Grand Island sophomore Clark Spanel (long jump/22-1). Bancroft sophomore Derek Frese placed 2nd to Smith in the discus (166-0) while Lexington sophomore John Laux was runner up in the triple jump (47-5.75).
