Wheat Breaks School Record
Kearney, NE — The Nebraska-Kearney track team added two more names to its list of NCAA provisional qualifiers Saturday at Doane's Tiger Track Classic. Sophomore John Laux (triple jump) and redshirt freshman Allen Burrell (55 meter dash) become the 13th and 14th different Lopers to qualify in at least one event. In addition, junior Nate Wheat set a new school record in the shot put.
Team wise Saturday, the UNK men placed first with 118 points, edging Nebraska Wesleyan by one point, while the Loper women were second (122) to host Doane (169).
Wheat, already a qualifier in the weight throw, is now a provisionally qualifier in the shot. He won the event with a toss of 56-5.75, besting the UNK record of 55-4.5, set by Tyson Bertrand in 2000. The throw also was a new meet record. Sophomore Kurt Nielsen was second with a season-best toss of 54-5.50. He ranked 7th in the nation last week in the event.
Burrell ran a 6.38 to win the 55 meter dash while sophomore Garth Mins was second (6.46). The time to provisionally qualify is 6.40. Laux was runner up in the triple jump with a leap of 47-10.25, well ahead of the provisional mark to beat (47-9). Also placing second in the meet were Casey Marsh (400/50.56), Shannon Stenger (mile/4:30.12) and Brian Meade (weight throw/55.-5.50).
Junior Timmery Nielsen paced the UNK women by winning the shot put with a season-best toss of 43-10.00. The throw is just above the 43-0.25 to provisionally qualify. Nielsen has already qualified in the weight throw.
Junior Megan Holmes won the weight throw (52-3) with teammates Amber Tiefenthaler (51-10.25) and Nielsen (50-4.25) coming in right behind her.
Junior Jessica Reinsch was the other Loper to place first on the day. She won the 55 meter hurdles (8.44) with Torri Walford (8.46) second. Also placing second were Leah Lewis (triple jump/38-10.75), Kathryn Alt (600/1:39.09) and Kate Semin (400/1:00.44).
UNK travels to Lincoln Friday for the Nebraska Wesleyan Classic, the last regular season meet of the year. The Lopers host the RMAC Championships in two weeks.
